Sophomores & Juniors: If you want to participate in GAVC, your application MUST  be turned in to Mrs. McNeese by Wednesday, February 28th.  See her in the Counseling Office with any questions.

Attention Current Drama Club members:  If you are interested in attending the Medieval Knights Tournament and Dinner show on April 18th, then you must pick up a permission slip form from Mrs. Sprecher starting Tuesday February 20th!  It will be a first come first served event, so come see Sprecher for details!  Forms and payment due February 27th!!!!!!!

Next Tuesday, the students of Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida will be returning to school for the first time after last week's tragic events. Let's send them notes of support and love! Please give Ms. Schaefer your notes by the end of the day Thursday.

Want Clean Teeth?  The dental hygiene clinic at the Carl Sandburg College Annex, 209 E. Main St., in downtown Galesburg is again providing low-cost dental services during the spring semester, with no insurance necessary for patients. The clinic offers teeth cleanings for as little as $10 in addition to full-mouth series X-rays and panoramic X-rays for patients of all ages.

Services are provided by second-year students in Sandburg’s dental hygiene program who are supervised by experienced, licensed faculty members and dentists. Appointments last about 3½ hours each, and it typically takes at least two appointments to complete a cleaning.

Prices for each series of services for the 2017-18 academic year are:

Adult cleaning — $25

Sandburg student with College ID — $15

Children’s cleanings — $15

Seniors (60+) — $10

Full-mouth series X-rays — $15

Panoramic X-ray — $15

The Ray A. Kroc Youth Achievement Award was designed to honor a senior who demonstrates the characteristics exemplified by Ray A. Kroc: Persistence, determination, hard work and excellence. Students who are employed by McDonald’s are eligible to apply for this award. The applicants are evaluated by a committee of school district officials on the grounds of citizenship, leadership, scholarship and sportsmanship. The recipient is a student who has earned the respect of peers and teachers alike. Each student selected receives a medallion and a certificate.

February Scholarships

"We the Students" essay competition gives high-school students from across the U.S. a chance to share their perspectives on a trending topic.

This year, we’re asking students to consider what role the government should play in monitoring internet content and we are awarding $20,000+ in scholarship and prizes to the winning essayists, including:

  • 1st Place – $5,000 and a scholarship to our 2018 Constitutional Academy in Washington, D.C.

  • Runners Up – Six prizes at $1,250 each.

  • Honorable Mentions – Eight prizes at $500 each.

Please encourage your students to sign up below and submit their 500-800-word essay before February 5, 2018.


Hy-Vee Foundation Scholarship Program: $1,000- 40 scholarships awarded

(Deadline: February 10, 2018)

To be eligible: Must be a high school senior working for Hy-Vee who began employment on or before 9/15/14  OR a high school senior son and/or daughter of a full-, regular-, or part-time Hy-Vee employee who has a minimum of six months employment.

Illinois PTA Scholarship:  1st Place- $3,000    2nd Place $2,000

(Deadline: February 15, 2018)

To be eligible:

  1. HS senior graduating from an Illinois Public School

  2. GPA of 3.0 or above

  3. Enrolling in a college/university in an education or education-related degree

Community Foundation-Great River Bend:    37 DIFFERENT  SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH OVER $380,000! (Deadline: February 15, 2018)

Mid Century Telephone Cooperative Scholarship: $1,000-4 scholarships awarded

(Deadline: February 22, 2018)

To be eligible: Be a graduating high school senior; live in a household where parent/guardian is members of Mid Century Telephone Cooperative; have at least a “C” grade point average; express an interest to return to a rural community following graduation

Illinois Chemical Education Foundation: $2,000    (Deadline February 28, 2018)

The Chemical Industry Council recognizes and  honors high school seniors who  have exemplified outstanding achievement in academics, extracurricular/employment activities and community involvement.

To be eligible: HS senior; IL resident and plan to attend a post-secondary educational institution located in Illinois.  Go to: www.cicil.net - Search for High School Scholarship

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program:  50 Scholarships up to $25,000/year

(Deadline: February 27, 2018)  For those who plan to major in a field focused on engineering, technology,  design or business with an interest in the automotive industry.

Carl Sandburg Foundation Scholarship (and Workshop):  

What: Carl Sandburg Foundation Scholarship Workshop (apply for over 150 CSC scholarships with 1 30-minute application!)

When:Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 during 6th period

Where: 2nd FL. Conference Room

Who: SENIORS  who are planning (or even thinking about attending Carl Sandburg College next fall)

What to have done ahead of time:

  • You MUST  have applied to Carl Sandburg (this is free)

    • Know your CSC LOG-IN ID & Password

    • Work on the required short essay responses in advance

    • Register on the sign-up sheet with Mrs. Hise by February 23, 2018

    • Mrs. McNeese will get you a pass to excuse you from 6th period that day


Helen H. Wetherbee Nursing Scholarship: (Due March 15)
Students accepted into a school of nursing or currently studying under a nursing program are encouraged to apply for the Helen H. Wetherbee Nursing Scholarship. This scholarship is open to Knox and Warren County area students. Cole Steele Memorial Scholarship: (Due March 15)
Students at Knoxville High School are encouraged to apply for the Cole Steele Memorial Scholarship. Applicants must be a Knoxville High School Senior interested in pursuing an education in a vocation program. Students having a background or experience in agriculture will be given additional consideration.
